Torque Wrench Fittings

Torque wrenches are highly precise pieces of kit, designed to apply the right amount of torque on a fastener to secure it properly. This is especially important in industries that need parts to be tightened to specific standards, like the automotive and aerospace industries. Torque wrench adapters are designed to allow the use of a torque wrench with various types of fastener allowing the precise application of torque. Cromwell stock a wide range of torque wrench adapters, compatible with many fastener types, from brands such as Gedore®, Norbar®, Stahlwille® and our very own Kennedy®, so you can be assured of a quality product to get the job done right.

What are torque wrench adapters?

Torque wrench adapters come in various types, compatible with different types of fasteners. Some adapters like extension bars and swivel heads are designed to allow easier access to hard-to-reach fastenings. They attach to the drive part of the torque wrench and in most cases directly to the fastener being tightened to apply torque when tightening (and loosening).

Why torque wrench adapters?

Torque wrenches are highly precise. Operating like a traditional ratchet wrench, their main difference is they are a lot more precise when it comes to the application of torque being used on the fastener. You can set the level of torque on the wrench, once the correct amount of torque has been reached (i.e. the right tightness) the wrench will make an audible click to let the operator know that the right amount of torque has been achieved. Adapters work by offering alternatives to traditional wrench sockets, allowing for fasteners in hard-to-reach areas or different types of fastener to be tightened with a torque wrench.

Types of torque wrench adapters

Torque wrench adapters come in a variety of shapes and sizes designed for use with a variety of applications and fasteners.

Crowfoot wrench adapter - This adapter allows the tightening of fasteners like a traditional spanner or wrench. It attaches to the drive via the square shaped hole in the base of the head.

Swivel head adapter - These are designed to hinge at an angle to allow the wrench to be positioned at a more suitable angle to apply torque. They are useful for hard-to-reach fastenings.

Considerations when choosing a torque wrench adapter

The type of fastener - Selecting the right adapter to fit the fastener that you intend to tighten is one of the most important considerations when selecting a tool.

Size - Match the adapter to the size of the fastener and the drive of your torque wrench.

Ease of access - In hard-to-reach areas the use of extension bars and swivel heads may be necessary.

FAQs

Do I need to recalibrate the torque when using an adapter?

Yes, when using swivel heads the direction of applied force could be impacted so if this is the case you will need to adjust the torque accordingly.
