Borescopes

Why borescopes?

Whilst they were initially used for inspecting and servicing the barrels of large guns, borescopes now have a broader use and are commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, manufacturing and plumbing industries, as well as for general quality control purposes. Borescopes in simple terms, are a kind of inspection camera. They are a convenient and easy way of offering visibility when inspecting inside pipes, holes or cavities.

Borescope types

Borescopes can be broadly split into four main categories, each offering differing levels of flexibility, mobility and depth of viewing. Whilst all four types of borescopes have their advantages, it's always best to ensure you check the specification of each kind before purchasing, to ensure you find the right product for your desired application. Below, the four main types of borescope are outlined, making it easy for you to shop our range of borescopes.

• Rigid   -   Rigid borescopes are used when only straight line access to your desired hole is required. The straight shaft is fixed and cannot be used in holes or cavities where there may be twists or turns.

• Semi-rigid   -   This type of borescope is semi-bendable and can be used on more irregular holes and cavities. However, the picture quality is usually slightly worse than rigid models.

• Flexible   -   Flexible borescopes offer the highest level of mobility and are ideal for use when inspecting more irregularly shaped shafts and cavities.

• Videoscope   -   This type of borescope possesses a digital camera on the tip of the scope, and a screen allowing you to accurately view your desired hole. They often boast an LED light for additional visibility when inspecting holes and cavities.

What are borescopes used for?

What is the difference between borescopes or endoscopes?

Endoscopes are technically, a type of borescope. Endoscope is the term used for a borescope when in a medical setting and is a product suited for use inside the human body. When used in other industries such as the automotive or manufacturing industry, the broader term borescope is used. It's important not to confuse the two products and it's always best to check that your product is suited for use in a living being if an endoscope is required.
