What's the difference between warning signs and mandatory safety signs?

Warning signs and safety signs are often displayed together. Warning signs are yellow in colour with black writing and warn the viewer of a risk ahead that requires them to proceed with caution, for example, 'Forklifts in Operation beyond this point'. Mandatory safety signs are blue and white and will display a graphical symbol with or without an explanatory message. These signs are compulsory and must be actioned by the viewer. For example, a sign depicting a safety boot with the words, 'Foot protection must be worn', means that beyond that point there are hazards that may crush or cut into normal footwear and cause injury.

Where are mandatory safety signs needed?

To determine where mandatory safety signs should be placed, a risk assessment should be completed. This will highlight areas of danger where accidents may occur and will allow for preventative processes to be put in place, such as allocated walkways, barriers, and the supply of PPE to staff. Mandatory safety signs can then be placed at access points to the areas and around machinery to reinforce safety processes.
