Clear signage in the workplace helps to reinforce safety training and promote risk awareness. Mandatory safety signs guide visitors and remind staff that there are risks ahead and that compulsory action must be taken. This action includes wearing safety footwear, a hi-viz jacket, or ensuring that a fire door remains closed and is not propped open.
Mandatory safety signs are available in a range of categories, from safety wear to no-go areas and hygiene practices. All mandatory signs must comply with BS EN ISO 7010:2020, which ensures the graphical symbols and colours comply with British legislation and European norms.
• Fire mandatory signs - Available in fan and non-fan versions, these space heaters are quick to heat up. They use the means of convection to transfer electrical energy from ceramic plates into the room.
• Hygiene mandatory signs - These signs include wearing hairnets in food preparation environments and washing hands in washrooms.
• Security mandatory signs - These signs stipulate no-go areas, remind staff to show ID cards and ensure certain doors stay locked.
• PPE mandatory signs - Where there is a risk to safety, these signs display the PPE that must be worn before entering the area.
What's the difference between warning signs and mandatory safety signs?
Warning signs and safety signs are often displayed together. Warning signs are yellow in colour with black writing and warn the viewer of a risk ahead that requires them to proceed with caution, for example, 'Forklifts in Operation beyond this point'. Mandatory safety signs are blue and white and will display a graphical symbol with or without an explanatory message. These signs are compulsory and must be actioned by the viewer. For example, a sign depicting a safety boot with the words, 'Foot protection must be worn', means that beyond that point there are hazards that may crush or cut into normal footwear and cause injury.
Where are mandatory safety signs needed?
To determine where mandatory safety signs should be placed, a risk assessment should be completed. This will highlight areas of danger where accidents may occur and will allow for preventative processes to be put in place, such as allocated walkways, barriers, and the supply of PPE to staff. Mandatory safety signs can then be placed at access points to the areas and around machinery to reinforce safety processes.
