A drawing compass is a technical drawing instrument used for creating circles or arcs. Compasses as usually made of metal or plastic, constructed of two legs, one with a spike at the bottom to anchor the compass in place, the other leg allows a drawing implement such as a pen or pencil to be inserted and locked into place, whilst the hinge adjusts the radius as desired to draw the circle. Drawing compasses are used for a range of purposes, these include technical drawing, mathematics, drafting, navigation and trades such as carpentry and construction. They are used to draw perfect circles or arcs with precise measurements for technical purposes.

Drawing Compass Types

There are 4 different types of compass.

• Beam Compass - Used for creating larger scale circles than your standard compass. Used more commonly for artistic work than precise technical drawings.

• Loose Leg Divider Compass - This has two pointed legs attached by a pivot, which allows you to draw more accurate circles.

• Scribe Compass - Also known as the drawing compass. Very similar to the Loose leg divider compass above, but has a needle at the bottom of one leg to anchor in place and give you a more accurate drawing.

• Proportional Compass - This is used to measure out accurate ratios rather than to draw perfect shapes.
